KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Syarie Lawyers Association
(PGSM) called for an investigation and action to be taken against the
41-year-old man from Kelantan who married an 11-year-old girl.
Its president, Musa Awang in a statement urged the
Kelantan Islamic Religious Department to also investigate those who were
involved in the solemnisation of the couple and have them brought to court.
"Principally, they had violated the Islamic
Family Law Enactment 2002 as the child marriage did not obtain consent from the
Syariah court.
"It is also an offence to practise polygamy
without the consent of the court.
"Those involved are considered accomplices,
including the girl's parents, witnesses and the agent who brought the couple to
the Thai border for the wedding.
"Whatever the reason (for the marriage), PGSM
is of the view that their action is clearly seen as challenging the law and
Islamic institutions including the state religious department and
council," he said.
Musa added it was time that the penalties for the
offences under the enactment were reviewed.
